Wearing your natural hair is all the buzz these days! Beautiful, curly natural hair is highly sought after by beauty advertisers; but what if your hair texture is cottony and kinky? When someone enters a room, school, workplace or even the grocery store with tightly coiled textured hair; there are immediate stares and whispers. Some of those stares and whispers are kind words of approval, but most are not.

Kinkier textured hair is sometimes frowned upon and viewed as unkempt. Some people have even gone as far as to ask kinky hair naturals why they didn’t do their hair! There are countless stories in which individuals have even been discriminated against simply because their hair doesn’t fit in with the “norm”.

Well frankly, I’m sick and tired of other cultures determining the standard of beauty for my culture. I’m also fed up with the fact that my culture has been brainwashed (insert history lesson on slavery and discrimination in America) to see ourselves as less than. Why is it that only straight and/or curly hair is deemed as acceptable or beautiful?  You definitely have to have thick skin to wear your kinky hair the way that it grows from your scalp and I’m going show you how to feel comfortable wearing your natural hair:

Redefine the Norm

Wear your hair how you want, when you want, because you can.  Embrace the compliments you receive and ignore the negative commentary. Your hair belongs to you.  If you look in the mirror and like what you see, that is the ONLY opinion that matters.  Don’t feel pressured to fit into any stereotype. The more others are exposed to our natural hair, the more normal it becomes.

There’s Power in Numbers

As the black culture continues to become more self-aware, health conscious, and proud; more of us are refusing to expose ourselves to unsafe chemicals or alter our appearance. In addition, when others see more and more women and men wearing their hair natural, they tend to feel more comfortable doing the same.  The natural movement is steadily growing, so find comfort in the fact that you are not alone on this journey.

Stop Being Concerned with What Others Think

Why would allow someone to make you feel insecure about your hair? If someone says something negative or ignorant, calmly and politely “school” them.  Another option is to wear statement tees expressing your love for your natural hair.  This will allow you to speak without saying a word.  The more internal confidence you have in yourself, the less outward approval you require from others.

“The more internal confidence you have in yourself, the less outward approval you require from others”

Embrace Your Roots

Read and learn about your history, culture and the greatness of your ancestors. Travel to other cities, states, and countries populated with individuals that share the same culture. Learn from them and educate the ones that don’t know.

Walk in Confidence

Akin to not being concerned with the thoughts of others; walking in confidence means that only you set standards for yourself.  Feel pride in who you are inside and out and know that we are all flawed yet perfectly made.  For many of us, this confidence comes with age and maturity, but it will come if you work towards it.

Teach the Children

Since we know that maturity usually supersedes confidence; we have to teach our children at an early age about self-love.  It is important to teach our girls and boys about all aspects of blackness, including different hair textures.  We must teach our children that beauty comes in many forms, not just one.  Black is beautiful just the way it is; no alterations needed.

This article is awesome and I love the ” teach the children” part!
My hair is natural and I wear it in all styles from afro, twist out to a bun. I get great compliments and it makes me feel so confident.

Thank you for reading! Self acceptance is crucial. Everyone has a right to feel comfortable in their own skin…hair included.

I love this! I wear my hair with confidence now, but when I first cut off the relaxed part 17 years ago, I was far less confident. In fact, I faked confidence but I felt pretty bad. I’m thankful for the encouragement from my husband, parents and a few friends. I blogged about my path to loving my natural hair a few months ago. I’m always happy to see other people loving theirs too.

I agree the only opinion that matters is your own. I do feel as black women we should be more accepting and less judgmental about other women hair.

I’m not natural but I so love that people can wear their hair any way they want and be proud of it. My daughter is natural and loves her hair.

  8. Leslie H says:

I have a 8yr old and have instilled natural hair pride from day 1. We live in a euro centric culture here and have to deliberately not allow that to swallow up our children with THEIR sense of what defines beauty. Love this topic !

  9. Kim says:

I stopped wearing weaves and perming my hair because of my daughter. I didn’t want her thinking that having straight, long hair was the only way to feel beautiful.

  10. Bernetta says:

I remember the first day I rocked my afro at work over 11 years ago! I got stares and silence. But I held my head high! It took some motivation on my part (motivating myself). So this article is on point and I hope it helps many walk in their glory!

  11. Mamie says:

I used to straighten my hair for a long time before I embrace my curls. I love them.

  12. Stacie says:

It took me longer than others to finally go natural but since then I have enjoyed every bit of it. You got to feel comfortable rocking what you got.

  13. I am relieved that natural hair is FINALLY in. I went natural like 13 years ago and I’m so not getting any odd looks any more like I used to.

  14. Lauren Floyd says:

It took me years to feel comfortable with my natural hair. I still don’t like it at times, but I’m getting better at styling it. Styling is everything!

  15. Kiwi says:

Key word is confidence. If you rock your hair with confidence and you love what grows out your hair it will be better and everyone around you will embrace you.
