Why your hair doesn't look like the girls on YouTube video

Hello Beautiful! Lets talk about why your hair doesn’t look like the girls on YouTube! Embracing natural hair is a journey of discovery.  As a naturalista, you are tasked with finding what works best for you and your lifestyle.  However, the journey does not have to be difficult.

Many women start their journey by viewing popular YouTube videos and then are disappointed when their hair does not turn out the way the girl’s hair looked on the tutorial.  Well there are valid reasons that your hair doesn’t look like the girls on YouTube videos.

Why Your Hair Doesn’t Look Like the Girls on YouTube

  • Firstly, your hair just doesn’t do that sis!  Your hair type typically determines how your hair will respond to a particular hairstyle.  For example, if you have type 4 (coily) hair; it is more fluffy and lightweight, so it is more likely to achieve an afro or twist out style better than a looser style such as a wash and go.  On the other hand type 1 (straight), type 2 (wavy), and type 3 (curly) hair is heavier and has a looser curl pattern, so styles such as a wash and go tend to be easier to achieve.  All hair types can achieve any style, but don’t expect your 4c results to look the same as 3b results.
  • Secondly, your hair lacks hydration! Hair that is not properly cleansed and conditioned will not be able to achieve a good hairstyle.  It does not matter what products you put in your hair or what hairstyle you attempt; hair that lacks hydration will not on achieve the look you are going for. You hydrate your hair by consistently using a moisturizing shampoo (AG Balance Apple cider Vinegar sulfate-free Shampoo, KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo, Crème of Nature Argon Oil Moisture & Shine Shampoo) followed by a rinse out conditioner (AG Boost Apple cider Vinegar Conditioner, Design Essentials Almond & Avocado Detangling Conditioner, Crème of Nature Argon Oil Moisture & Shine Conditioner) and/or deep conditioner (TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask, Shea Moisture Manuka Honey Intensive Hydration Hair Masque) at least once per week.  Cleansing the hair with a moisturizing shampoo allows the cuticles of the hair to open and allow moisture/water to enter.  The conditioner closes the cuticle and coats the hair shaft.  Hydration is the foundation for any great hairstyle, so before you attempt one please be sure that your hair is in optimal condition.

  • Thirdly, you are loading your hair with heavy oils!  I literally cringe when I hear people say that they grease their scalps.  We need to get out of the permed/relaxed hair mindset and adopt a natural hair mindset.  The concept with relaxed hair is to retain straightness; therefore, we tended to stay away from water and added oils to our hair.  Your hair produces its own natural oils.  You do not need to add anymore oil to your hair.  Oil is not a moisturizer.  Oil actually does the opposite (block moisture from entering the hair) of moisturizing your hair.  I tend to stay away from heavy oils and heavy oil based products as much as possible.  If you are using heavy oils, it is important to use a clarifying shampoo to properly cleanse your scalp.
  • Lastly, you are using products that are not healthy for your hair! With the growth of the natural hair industry; everyone is jumping on the bandwagon.  Many products that claim to be made for naturalistas are not beneficial for your hair.  Do not use products loaded with heavy oils, grease, parabens, sulfates, or any chemical that could be harsh or damaging to your hair.  If you have not achieved the growth or look that you desire; consider what you are putting in your hair. It very well may be the culprit.

In closing, I hope that these little tidbits are beneficial to you in caring for and styling your natural hair.  Before attempting any hairstyle, you need to ensure that your hair is in optimal condition.  You would not attempt to build a house on a poor foundation.  The same concept applies to your hair.  If you want to achieve maximum potential from any product or hairstyle; make sure that your foundation is strong and then your hair will look like the girls in the YouTube videos.

Thank you for these tips! I’ve been trying some natural styles and they aren’t turning out like the ones in the videos and now I know why. Also, I LOVE Creme of Nature! I use their shampoo and conditioner all the time!

  5. Helpful tips/reminders. As a black backpacker it’s difficult to find or carry multiple hair products. A solid go-to for me is and always be coconut or Aragon oil 🙋🏾‍♀️

  6. This is great information. As a naturalista myself it is always good to remember what products to avoid and best practices to achieve healthy hair and to get the looks you want to achieve.

Not every product is good for your hair and there are so many out there it’s hard to pick the right one. I tend to stick to old school stuff that has been around for a min. Great tips

  8. Yes, we have to know that everyone doesn’t have the same hair. We have to cater to OUR hair. I do not like weighing my hair down with oils but I do like to hydrate it. I love your honesty.

  10. Leslie says:

Great information! I am learning the errors of my ways. I would say oils is where I made my biggest error.

  11. Leslie H says:

Great info indeed. The VAST MAJORITY of hair corporations have no idea how “our” hair works so this is good stuff

  12. Stacie says:

Good points. I’m a firm believer that we all have different hair and textures and it won’t look like someone else but we can learn what works for us.

  13. Holly says:

This hairstylist made a video about how people do certain things to their hair to manipulate just to get an IG photo too. I def agree everyones hair is different and so not everyone can achieve the same or similar looks.

  14. Kiwi says:

Great tips also you and the person may not even have the same hair texture! Also sometimes people are using too many products to get their hair to curl a certain way and it’s just a lot of product buildup

  15. Honestly, isn’t this the truth! I feel like no matter what type of hair, somehow until you have a million products, it just won’t’ be the same.

  16. Kim says:

These are great tips/advice. You’re right, everyone’s hair isn’t going to do the same thing because… yeah, we all have different hair.
