Whoa Mama: That’s a Beautiful 1st Twist Out!

Attempting your 1st twist out can be a challenge. Can you believe that this beautiful naturalista has never worn a twist out?

I know there is a lo-key back-and-forth battle in the natural hair community about whether or not all hair types can achieve a wash and go.  As a type 4c natural, I’ve done a wash and go; but it usually looks like an afro.  So I figure; why do the extra steps when I can just fluff my hair and go.  When I want to rock an afro; I let my hair shrink, add water, a leave-in and shape it to my liking.  However, a wash and go does have the benefit of providing me with a little more definition.  Contrary to that debate; I believe that no such controversy exists with twist outs because every single natural can master a gorgeous twist out!

The key is to start on well-nourished and hydrated hair.  If you’ve read Natural Hair 101: Becoming Hair Goals, then you already know that healthy hair is the foundation of any natural hairstyle and in order for hair to thrive; it has to be routinely washed, conditioned, moisturized and protected.  If you haven’t read the post; please click the link above as it is a must read before attempting any of our hairstyles.

Check out the step-by-step instructions below to see how this beautiful naturalista achieved her 1st gorgeous twist out.

1st Twist Out Steps

Curls Creme Brule Whipped Curl Cream and Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly were used to achieve this style.
  1. Take desired size section pray hair (here we’re using about 1 1/2 inch) and spray with water, then detangle.
  2. Add a dime sized amount of Curls Creme Brule Whipped Curl Cream throughout the strands of each section.

  3.  Add a nickle sized amount Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly throughout strands, detangle again, twist until 1/2 inch is left, then twirl then ends.

4. Cover hair with a silk or satin bonnet/wrap to let dry.

5. Gently unravel each section.

6. Separate each twist 2-3 times and fluff to your desired look.  Here, we added a stylish scarf for extra pizzazz!
